WOMEN OVER 55 ARE THE FASTEST GROWING HOMELESS POPULATION IN AUSTRALIA

ONE NIGHT OF YOUR LIFE TO HELP HER HOME.

More than 40,000 women over the age of 55 in Queensland are experiencing homelessness including well over 1,000 in Greater Brisbane and more than 200 on the Gold Coast. These women are mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters and friends. They’re the women who fought for superannuation, yet didn’t have the same tenure in the workforce to accumulate it. Many spent years raising children and caring for others, taking time out of paid work and now face retirement without financial security. Super wasn’t compulsory until 1992, equal pay wasn’t granted until 1969, and between 1940 and 1960, women made up just 25% of the workforce.

Alarmingly this figure is predicted to more than double by 2036.

Suffering financial hardship driven by rising costs, lack of employment, limited superannuation and a lack of affordable housing, women over 55 are the fastest growing homeless population in Australia.

Known as the hidden homeless, these women are doing it tough by living in a car, couch surfing, living under the threat of violence and/or physically hiding.

HELP PROVIDE A FIT-FOR-PURPOSE HOME FOR HOMELESS WOMEN OVER 55.

For more than 30 years Mangrove Housing has provided housing with individually tailored support for vulnerable individuals, families, and elderly in our communities. In 2018, Mangrove Housing established The Forgotten Women project.

Along with providing housing, the right support is key as these women may be tackling many issues including dementia, chronic disease, frailty, elders’ rights, knowledge of legal avenues in cases of elder abuse, and more.

We want these women to be able to live with dignity and age securely in place, as every person deserves.

YOU CAN HELP MORE HOMELESS WOMEN OVER 55 INTO SAFETY.

The Live Like Her Challenge raises money to provide more housing for homeless women over 55 through The Forgotten Women project.

By taking part in the Live Like Her Challenge, you’re helping more women over 55 have a place to call home. You’ll help provide housing within their known communities and the necessary support, putting homelessness in their past.
